I Just Want to Bitch

I know this has nothing to do with me, but I felt sorry for the colleague who was called back to help out at A&E pharmacy at 5 PM today. Reason: the A&E pharmacy was over flooded with inpatient discharges, about 25 discharges, and the pharmacist on duty was not able to handle that on top of doing A&E prescriptions and inpatient supplies.

I don't blame the pharmacist on duty because I know there is no way to handle so many discharges at the A&E pharmacy. For starters, the A&E pharmacy does not keep enough stocks of cardiac and renal meds for supply on discharge; meaning the tech on duty with the pharmacist would have to keep running back and forth from the A&E pharmacy to the main retail pharmacy to obtain the stocks. Next, the A&E pharmacy is opened to handle A&E prescriptions. That is the priority not inpatient discharges nor inpatient supplies. After all, there is only one pharmacist and one tech on duty so manpower is limited.

All I can say is the doctors are really stupid to delay the discharges till that time. They should know that today is Chinese New Year's eve, and putting aside that today is a Saturday so the inpatient pharmacy was only opened for half a day anyway, they should plan to have the patients discharged yesterday or at least before 12 noon today. Did they do it? Nooo... They had to wait till the last minute to write the prescriptions with no regards to whether their colleagues in other departments can handle. All that is important to them is that they had written up the prescriptions so they can go home and enjoy their reunion dinner on time. They just don't b***** care.
